Zodiac Stories, Carved in Mother of Pearl

OceanCarvingLab creates zodiac jewelry from natural mother-of-pearl, combining the symbolism of astrology with the changing light, color, and texture of real shell. Instead of printing or simply engraving zodiac designs onto a flat surface, we carve them into the shell to create depth, shadow, and a miniature sculptural effect.

Our Story

OceanCarvingLab was founded by Kevin after years of working with jewelry design and shell carving. Over the past 15 years, our studio has explored how traditional jewelry materials can be combined with digital design, three-dimensional modeling, precision carving, and hand finishing to create pieces that feel more personal than mass-produced jewelry.

What began as a fascination with natural shell gradually became a collection centered on one idea: turning the twelve zodiac signs into small works of wearable relief art.

Why Mother of Pearl?

Mother-of-pearl is never visually static. Depending on the angle and the light, the same piece can shift between soft white, silver, green, blue, pink, or darker iridescent tones. Because it is a natural material, every shell has its own pattern, luster, and character.

For our signature carvings, we use approximately 2.5mm-thick natural mother-of-pearl rather than relying on very thin shell veneers. The additional thickness gives us enough material to create genuine relief, allowing facial features, hair, symbols, textures, and sculptural details to rise and fall across the surface.

How Each Piece Is Made

Every design begins as an idea. We first develop the artwork, then build a three-dimensional model to determine the depth, proportions, and details of the carving. The mother-of-pearl is then precision-carved before going through hand polishing, finishing, setting, inspection, and final assembly.

We use modern tools where they improve precision, and human hands where judgment, touch, and finishing matter most. We do not hide this process behind vague claims of being “entirely handmade.” For us, craftsmanship is about choosing the right method for each stage and taking responsibility for the final result.

Our Materials

Our collections are offered in different material levels so customers can choose according to their style and budget. Selected entry-level designs use gold- or silver-tone plated brass, while our premium necklace collections use 925 sterling silver. Certain sterling silver designs also include a 0.15ct lab-grown diamond accent.

We clearly state the material used on each product page because we believe customers should know exactly what they are buying.

Designed Around the Zodiac

The zodiac is the center of OceanCarvingLab. Rather than creating one design and simply changing the zodiac symbol, we explore different visual interpretations of the twelve signs—from playful character designs to classical mythological portraits, weathered archaeological textures, primitive chiseled forms, and more experimental artistic styles.

Our goal is not simply to make another zodiac pendant. We want each sign to feel like a small artifact—something connected to the person who wears it, but also interesting enough to be appreciated as an object of design.

Natural Means Unique

Because mother-of-pearl is a natural organic material, no two pieces will look exactly the same. Color, texture, iridescence, and small natural characteristics may vary from the photographs shown on our website.

We consider these variations part of the material rather than imperfections to be artificially hidden. At the same time, every piece is inspected before shipping, and we remain responsible for genuine quality problems.

From Our Studio to You

OceanCarvingLab is still a small independent jewelry studio. That means we cannot produce like a large factory—and we do not want to. It allows us to spend more time developing unusual designs, refining carving details, and creating pieces for customers who want something more personal than ordinary mass-market zodiac jewelry.
